New Wood Irrigation is a leader in micro irrigation in the plains region.
The company was started in the early eighties by Jim Keinholz, an irrigation engineer. Jim set out
to specialize in micro irrigation for shelterbelt plantings. He traveled to several countries to design and set up
micro irrigation systems. One such trip lasted 18 months in Pakistan working closely with the government and
local producers. Since that time hundreds of systems have been set up in the Dakotas and neighboring states.
We have been a major supplier to several SCS district offices as well as the Corps of Engineers. Through these channels of the SCS offices,
hundreds of farmers and ranchers use micro irrigation for tree survival and establishment of their shelterbelts.
What is Micro Irrigation?
Micro irrigation, also know as drip or trickle irrigation, is used in situations where frequent, slow, and precise application of water is desired.
Water is applied at low pressures (10-30 psi) directly to the root zone of plants and trees. This slow application increases yields while
enhancing growth and product quality. Micro irrigation is ideal for shelterbelts, nurseries, vegetable farms, home gardens, turf, landscapes,
and for cooling units in hog facilities.
Micro Irrigation Advantages:
- Less Water Usage-
Up to 30-50% less water used
- Increased Yields-
Water applied at root zone enhances growth
- Lower Energy Costs-
Pump less water at lower pressures
- Labor Savings-
Easy installation, less weeds to cultivate
- Decreased Disease-
Water does not get on the foliage or the fruit
- Better Use of Fertilizers-
Can inject into system thus directly to the roots
- Ideal for Steep Terrain-
Less runoff because of slow penetration of water
